Weehawken Creative Arts is a 501c3 nonprofit organization with classrooms in Ouray and Ridgway. Our mission "provide high quality arts education and personal growth opportunities to adults and children year-round."
Weehawken has three facilities where many programs take place:
One classroom space in Ouray at 1900 Main Street (the old Biota Building - South entrance).
One classroom and administrative office space in Ridgway at 630 N. Cora Street (upstairs)
One Community Clay Center in Ridgway at 167 N. Cora Street (upstairs).
In addition, Weehawken offers workshops and classes in additional facilities and outdoors whenever necessary.
Presently, Weehawken Creative Arts offers over 365 programs to the community and its visitors each year. Classes from both regional and nationally known instructors are offered. Subjects covered include classes in:
Creative Writing & Poetry
Dance (ballet, modern, jazz, tap, hip-hop
Horticulture and Gardening
Tumbling & Gymnastics
This year (2012), Weehawken has introduced a new CLAY CENTER in Ridgway called "ALL FIRED UP!". The Clay Center is a comprehensive studio offering ceramics, clay, pottery painting, mosaics and more. "All Fired Up!" Clay Center offers something for everyone:
Open Pottery Painting (you choose the piece and create the design to paint on the piece)
Wednesdays from 10 am - Noon,
Thursdays from 4 pm - 8 pm
Saturdays from Noon until 4 pm
Themed Potery Painting Projects (such as a Mother's Day, Easter or holiday gift)
Hand-Building Workshops: from coil work to pinch pots, this is a great beginning skill for all ages
Wheel Throwing: we offer basic beginning, private lessons and specialty workshops
Open Studio for established clay students: experienced potters can access the space on their own time to work their creative juices into new pottery projects
Parties: book "All Fired Up!" Clay Center for your next birthday, shower or favorite celebration!
In addition, Weehawken offers several specialty programs and events including:
Monthly Artist Studio Tours (Ouray and Ridgway)
Full-scale ballet performances (The Nutcracker in December and a spring production in mid-May)
Children's Theatre (summer)
The Annual Gingerbread House Workshop in December
The Annual Ridgway Rendezvous Arts and Crafts Festival in Ridgway (2nd weekend of August)
The Ridgway Amateur Sculpture Contest in June
"Metamorphosis" - a Junk to Art Competition & Reverse Raffle fundraiser ($1500 cash prize) on September 22
Weehawken is funded by Tuition, Grants, Tickets, Sponsorship, Fundraising, Membership and Individual Contributions (donations). Membership to the organization is open to any interested person.
