Grand Mesa Summit Challenge Dog Sled Race
Saturday & Sunday, January 28-29, 2012, 8:30 AM – 1:30 PM
Sled dog racing on the Grand Mesa National Forest started in 2005. The Grand Mesa Summit Challenge is the highest sled dog race in North America at 10,300 feet in elevation. Since the first event of 29 mushers, they have grown to over 40 sled god teams and hundreds of spectators. Colorado can boast of having some of the fastest sled dog sprint teams in the United States. In past years, as many as five Grand Mesa Race competing mushers have qualified and competed in the World Sled Dog Championships.
This year they are teaming up with the Partners Organization for young people in order to help raise funds for both the Grand Junction and Montrose groups. They will have a symposium on Friday, January 27 featuring guest speaker John Perry, Colorado’s own 6-time International Sled Dog Racing Association Gold Medalist and a silent auction benefitting Partners. On Saturday, January 28, they will have a mushers’ dinner and a second silent auction in Cedaredge, CO.
There will be 5 different race classes: 4,6,8, and 10 dog sled races and 2 dog Skijor classes. The races are sprints of 4 to 12 miles in length. Winners are determined by combining the 2-day race times to find the fastest teams. Races start and finish at the Summit Top parking lot on HWY 65 on Grand Mesa.
Presented by the Rocky Mountain Sled Dog Club, the Colorado Mountain Mushers and Partners.
