August & September Events

Ouray County Fair and Rodeo - Ouray County Fairgrounds Celebration
August 28 - September 1, Ouray County Fairgrounds and 4H Center
The newly renovated historic Ouray County Fairgrounds will be the place to be over a five-day Labor Day weekend for the combined celebrations of the Ouray County Fair, the Big Outdoor Dance with Opal Moon, Ridgway Ranch Rodeo and CPRA Rodeos.
Join our community at the ribbon cuttings for the brand new grandstands on Thursday, August 28th (4:30 pm) and for the new Preifert arena and stock pens on Saturday, August 30th (4:00 pm). The rebuilding of the grandstands has been made possible by generous grants from investment partners including Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO), The El Pomar Foundation and local donations. Ouray County has also committed a large contribution to the grandstands project. The new grandstands will seat 1,468 spectators, plus a VIP/Press Box for another 20 folks.

The 2014 Ouray County Fair features all the standard 4-H livestock events, including horse, beef, swine, poultry, dog, and sheep. Everyone is invited to enter a project and win a ribbon. Open Class contestants can compete in categories such as baked, canned, and dried food; pie and cookie baking; needle, fancy work and crafts; arts & photography; floriculture and produce. All Open Class entries for the Ouray County Fair must be registered on Thursday, August 28th from 9am until 12 noon.
Additional fair activities include:
Thursday - 6:00 pm - Antique Tractor Pull sponsored by the Thunder Mountain Flywheel Club. See over 30 tractors from 1955 or earlier.
Friday night - 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm - the Big Outdoor Dance featuring live music with Opal Moon. Fundraiser for additional fairground renovation projects held on the fairgrounds racetrack.
Saturday - 9:00 am to 1:00 pm - Portable Planetarium, 4-H Event Center Exhibit Hall. Tours inside the planetarium will be on the hour and ½ hour. The program features comets and the September sky. There will be additional presentations on NASA’s research programs. Multiple solar telescopes will be set up outside the Event Center by members of the Black Canyon Astronomical Society.

The Ridgway Ranch Rodeo kicks off Saturday, August 30th after the arena ribbon cutting ceremony at 4:00 pm. The Ranch Rodeo will be the first official program in the new Fairgrounds Arena. Thanks to the financial and volunteer support of the Ouray County Rodeo Association, an anonymous ‘angel donor’, and local volunteers, the old arena has been rebuilt with a new Priefert model, complete with new bucking and roping chutes, stock pens, and a reconditioned arena floor. Ranch Rodeo events include a Calcutta followed by Mutton Bustin’ for 5 to 9 year olds (a ‘wild and wooly’ event not to be missed), a mounted shooting competition and exhibition and local, 12-team Ranch Rodeo Events including: Doctoring, Branding, and the great crowd pleaser, Trailer Loading.

Mutton Bustin’ will also be featured during the next two days of CPRA Pro-Rodeo events on Sunday and Monday August 31st and September 1st starting at 1:00 pm. The 2-day CPRA Rodeo will feature all the exciting rodeo events every crowd loves: barrel racing, bull riding, mix team roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling and team roping; plus the popular local events steer packing, a relay race, a bed roll race and a rescue race.

The Ouray County Rodeo Association is sponsoring this year’s dance, ranch rodeo, and CPRA rodeos. All profits will go to completing the Grandstands Phase I project. A very special 4-Day pass is being offered for advance sales only of $20 for all four great events. Please contact the Ouray County 4H Center 970-626-3304 to purchase tickets.
