Delicious Fare for all Tastes
Finding something to fuel your stay in Ouray can be as much of an adventure as playing in our mountains. From continental fine dining and big western steaks to hand-formed burgers, gluten-free pizza to fresh trout, locally-sourced cuisine to fish and chips, and handmade chocolate to fine micro-brews, Ouray has something to tempt your taste buds.

“Eat local” takes on a whole new meaning in Ouray. In addition to offering local food and produce in season, no chain restaurants currently operate in the county. Every locale is locally and independently owned and prides itself on unique menus that reflect the personalities of the owners and chefs. It’s not uncommon to have the owner right at the hostess station or behind the bar welcoming you like family or inviting you to try the newest thing on the menu! Be sure to always ask about the daily specials, or what local craft beverage is on tap at the bar.
Being so high in elevation, people may wonder if anything actually grows here. Boy does it ever…and it makes the local cuisine so much better. It’s actually part of our history! When Ouray was the mining hub of Ouray County, the rest of Ouray County and the Uncompahgre River Valley were devoted to ranching and agriculture. This agricultural history still runs deep today with working ranches, farms and vineyards supplying the weekly farmers’ markets in Ridgway, Telluride, Montrose and Durango with fresh produce, meat, hops and grapes. Duckett’s Market in Ouray is home to our local butcher who will cut a perfectly aged steak exactly how you want it for the grill, and local chefs forge relationships with heirloom growers and ranchers to serve the best our valley has to offer on their tables. The annual Ouray Fork Fest in May celebrates our local restaurants and growers. If you are a food fan, that may be the perfect weekend to preview of our San Juan Mountain cuisine.
