Celebrate Seven Weeks of Winter in Ouray
Ouray’s WinterFest is a seven-week holiday season of fun events and promotions to celebrate the start of the winter and holiday season in Ouray. Winterfest spans the period between Thanksgiving and the 22nd Annual Ouray Ice Festival in January, with different major activities happening every weekend, as well as many other events throughout the week. During this busy time of year let WinterFest and Ouray be your relaxing, friendly and spirit-filled getaway from the stress of the holiday season. Whether you are a local or a visitor, we are here for you with friendly shop owners, unique treasures for your loved ones, great treats, soothing sulfur-free hot springs, soft beds, and unique winter culture and adventure for the whole family!
Thursday, January 12: Sherb Talk: Living Sustainably in a Community—Cohousing, 7-9 PM, Sherbino Theater
Imagine living in a neighborhood that’s welcoming, safe and eco-friendly. Cohousing communities are custom neighborhoods designed to combine private homes with extensive community facilities to create some of the most socially and environmentally sustainable neighborhoods being built in North America. Cohousing is about living the good life while using less of the earth’s resources, and having a good time doing it. Attend a free Presentation to learn more about creating cohousing in Ridgway, from one of the nation’s leading cohousing experts: Katie McCamant of CoHousing Solutions. Doors at 7:00pm. Friday, January 13: Opening Artist's Reception: "Ouray @ Night" - Photos by Matthew Genuit, 4-6 PM, Wright Opera House
Ouray County Arts Association Exhibition at the Wright Opera House. Reception runs from 4-6 pm on the 13th. A new exhibit featuring the incredible night time photography of a Ouray local will open on January 13th from 4 to 6pm, and will be open for viewing thereafter at all Wright events. View the beauty of Ouray in a different light.
Friday, January 13: Open Mic Night, 6:30-9 PM, Sherbino Theater
It's a 'Full Wolf Moon' open mic night at the Sherbino! With January's open mic night falling on a 'full wolf moon,' bring your instruments and voice to 'howl' at the full moon on Friday, January 13th. Sherbino open mic nights are for songwriters, musicians, and all around music enthusiasts in the community. All ability levels and ages are encouraged to share their artistic talents. Entry for the event is free (donations are greatly appreciated) and a beer and wine cash bar will be open throughout the night. Those who would like to participate will sign up upon arrival. Come share, meet, and support others who share in the passion for creating and expressing through songwriting/music at Sherbino open mic nights. Doors at 6:30pm. Open Mic starts at 7:00pm. $5 suggested entry at the door.
Saturday, January 14: PARC Winterfest Games, 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM, Ouray Rotary Park
Enjoy fun, free games on and off the ice at Rotary Park, organized by the Ouray Parks and Recreation Committee. Human Hungry Hippos & Slingshot on the ice! Broomball (BYOBroom!). Ice skate rentals will be free during the event and hot chocolate will be available.
Tuesday, January 17: Colorado Experience Roadshow: Screenings of "Courthouses" and "Dinosaurs," 5:30 PM, Sherbino Theater
Special Event & Screeing at the Sherbino. Doors at 5:30 pm; screening at 6. Free. The Colorado Experience Roadshow is stopping by the Sherbino with the screening of the episodes, "Courthouses" and "Dinosaurs," with a Q&A session to follow. Presented by Rocky Mountain PBS and the Colorado Office of Film, Television and Media, this a free and family friendly event at the Sherbino.
Wednesday, January 18: Movies at the Wright: Lost and Beautiful, 6:30 PM, Wright Opera House
Despite death threats from the Mafia and his country's general apathy, a humble shepherd, Tommaso, takes it upon himself to look after the abandoned Bourbon palace of Carditello, deep in the heart of the 'Land of Fires.' Wednesday, January 18: Ace Kvale - Solvitur Ambulando: Solved by Walking, 6-9:30 PM, Sherbino Theater
Solved By Walking: To walk, to be free of artificial constructs, to feel earth, sky, the forces of life through our feet, sun on our skin or maybe rain, it’s all one.
Ace Kvale, world renowned photographer, adventurer and humanitarian, has been wandering the globe, camera in hand, for over 30 years. His images have appeared everywhere from National Geographic to the National Enquirer. Ace will share his passion for travel, for adventure, for life! The ups, the downs, and most recently his obsession with the most remote canyons of the Colorado Plateau. A sixty day journey searching for ancient routes in the canyon country. Join us as Ace shares his adventure through images, film and captivating stories. $10 door donation goes to the George Gardner Scholarship Fund.
Thursday, January 19 – Sunday, January 22: 22nd Ouray Ice Festival, Ouray & Ouray Ice Park
The Ouray Ice Festival is held each January and is the annual gathering of the ice-climbing tribe and the main fundraiser for the Ouray Ice Park. For three days and three nights Ouray is an absolute ice climbing mecca; ice climbers, both novice and pro travel from around the world to celebrate the growing sport of ice climbing. During daily vendor exhibitions Festival attendees have the opportunity to demo the latest ice tools, apparel, and gear from the Outdoor industries leading retailers. Hundreds of spectators line the top of the Gorge on Saturday and Sunday to watch the world’s best ice and mixed climbing talent battle for the prize! And, with over 100 interactive and educational climbing clinics to accommodate every skill level, Festival participants are sure to have an experience to remember. Nightly events include multimedia presentations by leading climbers, music, food, dance parties and a live and silent auction overflowing with screaming deals of the latest outdoor gear!
